Civil War diary and related correspondence, 1864-1907.

The collection contains 1894 correspondence between Miss Kate G. Hubert and C.M. and James Wood McIlhenny seeking a relative of the diarist to return a Civil War diary to his family; James Wood McIlhenny recounts the circumstances of its capture by Confederate soldiers in 1864 and Hubert explains how she obtained the diary. In 1907 Lizzie in Philadelphia sends the diary, two cartes-de-visite of McIlhenny in 1861 and 1884, and biographical information on McIlhenny to her cousin Arthur E. Green in Baltimore. The diary, 4 May-4 July 1864, recounts the journey from Culpeper Court House, Va., toward Fredericksburg, Richmond, and Hanover County with battles and skirmishes along the way, including the battles of Cold Harbor, New Market, North Anna, Spotsylvania Court House, and the Wilderness. The diary was captured when McIlhenny's company was atacked by Mosby's Confederates in the Winchester, Va., area. McIlhenny copied the 4-12 May entries in ink after Hubert returned the diary in 1894.
